School: keeping an eye on racial issues

During recent weeks, anti-racist protests and demonstrations have been occurring across several cities around the world and on social networks in response to the death of young João Pedro (RJ), George Floyd (USA) and so many other black lives lost. The images are shocking and reveal where humanity stands regarding racial equality.

Racism is a very deep-rooted structural problem and has yet to be cured. It is something that affects institutional spaces, our personal relationships and vocabulary, often unconsciously. That is why it is essential as a school to constantly address racial issues and work daily to transform this reality. Last year, the be.Living team participated in training on Ethnic-Racial Education, with several lectures given by professionals from different areas. These conversations were used to foster a space for broad dialogue and teachers were able to reflect on how to approach issues related to representativeness with the children. The study stimulated a greater democratization of information and knowledge, seeking to appreciate and strengthen the diverse ethnic-racial identities of children and others involved in the school learning process. From then on, projects began to be considered with a closer look at these issues and the literary and cultural repertoires were expanded.

It is important to always remain open to listening to and seeing new and different perspectives and, thus, collaborating with the construction of a plural space that recognizes and appreciates the knowledge and beauty that exists across a wide variety of ethnic groups. We hope that pedagogical actions and proposals created with this care to provide different narratives may help to forge new paths and place the issue of racial respect and equality on the agenda more often, not only at school, but throughout society.
